3 Ways to Radically Shift Your Mindset to Succeed in 2020
The beginning of a new year (or a new decade!) is a great time to set new goals and refresh your mindset. While New Year’s resolutions themselves are a bit silly (when it comes to making radical changes in your life, today is the most important day), it’s still a good opportunity to reassess and redirect.
If you feel trapped at your firm – always working in the business rather than on the business, drowning in admin work, not enough clients – here are some ways to shift your mindset in 2020:
1. Learn to Say No
You must be a master of your calendar and your daily emotional energy. By nature, saying “yes” to something is saying “no” to something else. If you don’t have a concrete vision and plan for your time, someone else will fill that time for you with their stresses and needs. Don’t be at the mercy of others. Set your own schedule and stick to it.
This includes saying no to clients. The 80/20 rule applies here: 20% of your clients end up creating 80% of your stress. The sooner you fire these bad clients, the sooner you can take back control and get your quality of life moving in the right direction. I started firing clients before I built the marketing machine I have today. It’s an essential first step.
2. Embrace the Abundance Mentality
No more whining about the big “TV and billboard” firm in your county. No more complaining about changes to your practice area or clients who harass you. Life is much more prosperous and enjoyable when your mindset is founded on positivity and abundance.
There is more than enough legal work to go around for everyone. The big firm isn’t “stealing” your clients any more than you are stealing from them. The more love and positivity you’re able to put out into the world the better. When you relish in being a victim, potential clients and referral sources pick up on that and turn away.
3. Believe that Big Change is Possible
So many attorneys I speak to are stuck in a rut because they’re convinced that the results they’re getting are eternal and unchangeable. Meanwhile, other attorneys in their exact same situation are taking action and getting results. The only difference between the two is mindset and how they choose to deal with adversity.
You can absolutely build a firm that 1) attracts the clients you’re meant to work with, 2) serves your desired lifestyle, and 3) doesn’t require 80 hour work weeks. Change cannot occur until you first believe that it is possible. Without this shift in your mentality, nothing else can move forward.
2020 belongs to those who have clarity of vision and the willpower to control their lives. Make sure you’re one of them.

Most attorneys start their firms assuming that being a really, really good attorney should, in and of itself, be a marketing advantage. Those attorneys believe that joining a whole bunch of committees and putting their name in lawyer directories is “marketing,” and they never bother to ask if there is a better way.
Attorneys are catching on, however, and those who succeed learn to leverage their current resources to create effective (and ethical) marketing. What they discover isn’t a magic pill or silver bullet but a different approach to marketing that your competitors haven’t considered.
