How Lawyer Mastermind Groups Work
I’ve been part of business masterminds for almost all of my professional career. For over fifteen years, I’ve run my own lawyer mastermind group and invited attorneys from all corners of North America. As of 2021, Great Legal Marketing has two lawyer mastermind groups and two group coaching groups. The attorneys who participate in these lawyer masterminds are some of the smartest law firm owners I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.
What is a Lawyer Mastermind?
A lawyer mastermind is a group of attorneys who regularly meet to discuss the practice of law, finances, marketing, staff management, and the business of running a law firm. Mastermind groups are usually populated with law firm owners or partners and one or two staff members. My lawyer mastermind groups meet in person four times a year, and we have virtual conferences once a month.
What Can You Learn in an Attorney Mastermind Group?
The members of a lawyer mastermind group largely decide what to discuss at a mastermind meeting. The discussion topics in a good lawyer mastermind are moderated by one or two head attorney coaches. These coaches help keep the conversations productive by asking questions, introducing topics, and redirecting unproductive conversations.
At in-person mastermind meetings, the attorneys will present on a topic of their choosing and invite the other members to ask questions and offer feedback. There are a lot of attorneys can learn in a lawyer mastermind group. Below are some examples of the scope of topics discussed at an attorney mastermind group:
- How to find and hire the right people for your law practice.
- Tactics for marketing tracking and improving marketing performance metrics.
- How to motivate staff members through goals and KPI tracking.
- Business lessons from outside the legal industry.
- How to build and leverage relationships with local business owners.
- Stories that attorneys can create and share to get more clients.
- What a practice can do to enhance the client experience.
- How to run a values-driving practice.

Most attorneys start their firms assuming that being a really, really good attorney should, in and of itself, be a marketing advantage. Those attorneys believe that joining a whole bunch of committees and putting their name in lawyer directories is “marketing,” and they never bother to ask if there is a better way.
Attorneys are catching on, however, and those who succeed learn to leverage their current resources to create effective (and ethical) marketing. What they discover isn’t a magic pill or silver bullet but a different approach to marketing that your competitors haven’t considered.
